Gay couple to sue church over gay marriage opt-out

FIGHTING FOR GAY RIGHTS: Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow at Westminster on the day the gay marriage bill was backed by MPs.

The Christian Institute reports the following:

Wealthy gay dad, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, says he and his civil partner Tony will go to court to force churches to host gay weddings.

He told the Essex Chronicle that he will take legal action because “I am still not getting what I want”.

A Government Bill legalising gay marriage passed Parliament recently but it included measures to protect churches from being forced to perform same-sex weddings.

Challenge

Mr Drewitt-Barlow said: “The only way forward for us now is to make a challenge in the courts against the church.

“It is a shame that we are forced to take Christians into a court to get them to recognise us.”

He added: “It upsets me because I want it so much – a big lavish ceremony, the whole works, I just don’t think it is going to happen straight away.

“As much as people are saying this is a good thing I am still not getting what I want.”

Lobby

The gay couple shot to fame in 1999 when they became the first British same-sex couple to be named on their children’s birth certificates.

They entered a civil partnership in 2006, and Barrie Drewitt-Barlow has reportedly donated around £500,000 to groups lobbying for same-sex marriage.

Last year the Church of England warned that the Government’s plans to redefine marriage could trigger legal problems and end the 500-year link between church and state.

‘Problematic’

In January this year a leading lawyer cautioned that the plans left the Church of England open to legal challenge.

The Prime Minister was sent a copy of the legal opinion by Lord Carey, a former Archbishop of Canterbury.

In June 2012 Crispin Blunt MP, who was then a Justice Minister, admitted that the Government’s plans could lead to legal issues.

He said the Government is “seeking to protect, indeed, proscribe religious organisations from offering gay marriage”, but he continued: “That may be problematic legally.”

If gays force the issue and clergy don't wish to perform such atrocities and desecrate the church, then I would imagine that you will see clergy step down from their positions in order to avoid such junk! The proverbial "gay" couple should not feel the need to try and force their behavior and beliefs on others….they don't like it when someone tries to tell them what the Word of God says about the homosexual lifestyle being an abomination before the Lord…."that goes against their rights!" Well, it goes against the rights of clergy when they have to take part in what they believe to be wrong as well!!! Tit for tat so to speak….there was a time that anyone who chose to participate in such an ungodly behavior would've been embarrassed to admit it openly, and they still should be!!! There will be a reckoning day for us all.

Isn't bad enough that this abomination is gaining legal status? Now these homosexuals want to take away the rights of those who dare to believe differently than them. It is a homosexuals choice to participate in a particular sin but they have no right to force others to participate in their sin. Also I was wondering if the government starts to force clergymen to perform same sex ceremonies, would that be a violation of the separation of church and state?

Absolutely, Laura. That WOULD violate the separation of church and state. They are always throwing that up in our faces and yet that is just what this would do…the state would be dictating what the church can and cannot do and interfering with Christian practice and doctrine. The so called 'free world' is looking more and more like China everyday.

You are taking the rights away from the gay community, and by the way, most gays that I know (and I know a lot of them) don't try to force people to become gay or force people to have sex with them. I am gay, and I think that you are taking away our rights, and then blaming us for taking away your rights just because we exist.

        Anon,

You have NO right to re-define what God has already defined! "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." Genesis 2:24
This is the definition of marriage, given by the One who ordained it from the beginning.
You are a homosexual who is in blatant sin against your Creator. God has already commanded that you shall not lie with a man as one lies with a woman {see Leviticus 18:22}. God ordained family to be one man married to one woman; to produce offspring, to share their lives together, to love one another and to love and serve God.
This is not about any right at all, this is about homosexuals trying to change what God has already ordained. I pray you will take this warning very, very serious…" Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous." Hebrews 13:4

Jesus Christ died for the ungodly, those who have, by grace, seen the horrors of their sins against their Maker. The Lord Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross, becoming a sin offering for those who believe. He shed His blood, He bore God's wrath, and He satisfied that wrath. Your greatest need is NOT some fictitious 'right' you think you are entitled to – your greatest need is the mercy of the thrice-holy, powerful, righteous, merciful God. You have NO clue what awaits you if you continue in your rebellious ways.

He who is without sin, cast the first stone, however i agree in that we are being judged for our lack of preaching sin and our need for salvation and then holiness.

Adultery was also to be judged by stoning, yet God allowed divorce instead of stoning as an alternative to allow for mercy. Seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. We all deserve death, not just sodomites, but in his mercy he provided an alternative through the atoning work on the cross. It is wrong to separate God with either his justice, and his mercy.

And God's justice says man shall surely be out to death. That is His mercy to the moral in society.

First of all, "gay" at the beginning of the 20th century, meant sexually promiscuous. Not happy. And it was used as an insult for gay people by people… well, by people kind of like you. And then gay people adopted the term themselves, much as the younger generation is adopting the term "queer". To make the word harmless.

Being gay is not a psychopathology. It's a normal variation. Now… a lot of gay people are leftists. That's a psychopathology. But being gay? Nope.

Actually, no, the word "gay" has never meat "sexually promiscuous", but has always, prior to is misappropriation by sodomites, meant being merry or lively. We know this because Deck the Halls, a song with the line "don we know our gay apparel" was written in the late 19th century.

And yes, being a sodomite is a very serious psychopathology, for it is a deviant sexual behavior, especially by the delusional who confuse an anus for a vagina, as are all other deviate sexual behavior, such as incest, pedophilia, bestiality, rape, etc, and should be subject to the same criminal sanction: capital punishment.

        Lisa,

being homosexual is not a normal variation, the word of the Most High God states very clearly this is an 'abomination'. – " Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." Leviticus 18:22 This is not the only verse in the Bible that forbids this type of sexual immorality. Homosexuality goes against nature, what was instilled in every one of us at birth – For this cause God gave them up unto vile passions: for their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working unseemliness, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was due." Romans 1:26-27 God's word proves this is anything but a 'normal variation', this is a deliberate departure from what God ordained, man with woman and woman with man, as this truth is suppressed, rejected, and rebelled against; resulting in God letting sinners go in the direction they are naturally bent on going…into sin.
I praise the Lord He saved me from lesbianism, as well as all my sins, ten years ago. All sex outside the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman is forbidden by God and He will judge the immoral sinner. America is under God's wrath, the wrath of abandonment, and that will be followed by more severe judgment. How will you stand before a Holy God Lisa? What is in your 'heart', have you had sex outside God's ordained covenant of marriage? Have you ever taken anything that did not belong to you, or told a lie, or cheated on your taxes, a test, etc? Have you hate in your heart for your neighbor or for God? You are a sinner, you will perish in your sins for all eternity apart from the gracious mercy of a God who desires to save the ungodly. Jesus Christ came to save sinners, He bore the wrath of God on the cross and made atonement for sin. He suffered, died, and rose from the dead on the third day. Trusting completely in His finished work for reconciliation back to a holy God is your only hope. You have a day appointed by God that you will die, and after that, face judgment; unless He is merciful, you hope lies in this life only and it's not lasing. My prayer is that God will open your ears and eyes to your own wickedness, that Jesus Christ will be made real to you by the work of the Holy Spirit. Salvation is of the Lord Lisa, may He cause you to cry out 'O God, be merciful to me, a sinner'.

You're very much mistaken, Lyn. God forbade one act between men. As opposed to the numerous prohibitions directed at heterosexuals. It's people, not God, who have taken that one prohibition — which is an absolute prohibition, no question about it, even for non-Jews — and turned it into a stick to beat people with. Abomination is used for eating shellfish, having dishonest weights and measures, and speaking badly about people. You might want to consider that last one, by the way.

As far as your quote from Romans, I have to apologize. I don't take anything in the Christian add-ons to the Bible very seriously. It doesn't at all surprise me that the guy who wrote "It's better to marry than to burn" would have other sexual hang-ups.

When I die, I will stand before the one true God, and while I will certainly have things to answer for (as everyone will), this isn't one of them. But I will ask you, have you hated others for being born differently? Have you gone far beyond what God Himself commanded in your zeal, and persecuted the innocent?

As far as "salvation", I don't believe in Original Sin. I don't believe that sin is a state of being that one can be in. It's an action, and God has given us the means of atoning for sins. And it has nothing to do with someone who may or may not have existed being executed by Rome some two thousand years ago. God is indeed a merciful God, and gave us the ability to repent. And He is a God of Truth, who does not "change His mind" about the commandments He gave at Mount Sinai.

You are the one in error Lisa; I have given scriptural proof that God detests homosexuality, you have given no proof that He does not.

As for Romans, there were no add-ons, just your attempt to claim that all of the Bible is not inspired by God, but He makes you out to be a liar in 2 Timothy 3:16, " Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness".
2 Peter 1:20-21, " knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation. For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Ghost."
Denying the New Testament as God's inspired word is denying the Savior Himself…Jesus Christ.

There is no such thing as being born differently, and how could I hate anybody who is in bondage to sin, especially the sin that I was once in bondage to? To speak God's truth is NOT hate speech, it is done in hopes that they will be saved from God's wrath. Let's quit using hate when it does not apply, followers of Christ do NOT hate sinners, we love them enough to warn them of the wrath to come because of their sins.
Back to being born differently, here is what God's word states about the sins we all choose, whether it be sexual or otherwise, "et no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man: but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed." Each of us is to blame for our choices. When a husband cheats on his wife, or a man on his girlfriend, or visa versa, is this because they were born differently? Let's be clear, sexual sin, all of it, is chosen by those who commit it. Sexual sin is birthed out of the human heart, as all sin is. Read the words of Christ found in Matthew 15:19, " "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders." What is the heart'? It is translated from the Greek word kardia; Strong's defines this as ' the thoughts or feelings (mind)', Thayer's Greek definitions defines kardia as ' the soul or mind, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavours, of the understanding, the faculty and seat of the intelligence, of the will and character'. Christ Himself teaches that sin, ALL sin, including all forms of sexual sin, derive from our own hearts, from within.

As for denying Christ and His atoning work on the cross, your belief in God is no better than that of demons if you deny Christ.

Joh_3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
1Jn_5:12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

John 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
John 3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Christ came to fulfill the law – Mat_5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

I proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles

Remember this when you try and claim separation of church and state…

"First, “the separation of church and state” is not mentioned or alluded to in the Constitution. Second, the concept of “the separation of church and state” is found in the First Amendment, the relevant part of which simply reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” In other words, the state needs to stay out of the church’s business. It was not until 1947 that the Supreme Court invoked the principle of “separation of church and state” in a legal ruling.

Third, the wording for “separation of church and state” is based on Thomas Jefferson’s reply to the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut in 1802, but as Yale law professor Stephen Carter pointed out, “The separation of church and state, properly understood, comes from the work not of Thomas Jefferson, as is widely perceived, but from the insights of Roger Williams.”

" “The wall of separation between church and state is not there to protect the state from the church; rather, it is there to protect the church from the state. It stands as a divide to preserve religious freedom. And one needs to protect the church from the state because the latter will utilize its enormous powers to do what the state has always done – either subvert the religion or destroy it. If we continue our slide toward a state that breaches the wall of separation whenever it is convenient, then I worry about the great risk to religious freedom. In the end, such a breach could destroy our ability to form the communities of resistance that are crucial if we are going to have a chance to transform the nation.” Yale Law Professor Stephen Carter

Yes, homosexuality is a sin…..but let us look at the condition of the church in general. How many couple are divorced….and lead our children in youth groups, praise bands, boards, elders, deacons, and pastors? Clergy and laity alike have been engageing in divorce throughout the centuries and where is the church crying out against divorce as it does homosexuality?

Does not God hate divorce too? And when a person becomes divorced, they become more lenient in their belief system and thus, make divorce more acceptable within their families as the "sin" of divorce and adultry is the norm. And how many pew sitters and leadership alike manipulate and actually break up marriages in their church systems to appease their disdain for those they cannot control? Their is much wickedness already withing the walls of the church system by those who claim to know Jesus Christ, our Redeemer.

So, the church has not corrected the divorce rate in our country….can it control homosexuality as well.

For all have sinned….maybe it is time the church shows the world what repentance really looks like. Amen.

That is the key right there, isn't it. They 'claim' to be true Christians. But I question if they really are, because following Jesus means obeying what He says. If these people are divorcing, commiting adultery, and even manipulating others to get divorced as well, that doesn't sound like people who have taken Christ as their Lord. True believers would eventually repent and turn from their sin. It sounds like false converts to me. These are people playing at church…who totally believe they are Christians, but the fruit of their lives shows they are not. The true Church is not the visible church you see today. It is a small raiment who are scattered about from church to church…not the majority of those calling themselves Christian. That is what confuses people when they look at Christainity today. Most of what you see is fake, I am sad to say, due to the massive influence of the seeker sensitive/church growth movement which brought in lots of goats but failed to get them soundly saved. Now the goats are running the show for the most part and the 'church' looks pretty much like the rest of the world….but it is not the true Church.

Because of this, they are concerned about holiness and strive with all their hearts not to sin. They are quickly brought under conviction when they do sin and seek the Lord daily with a rependent spirit. If someone is living in unconfessed, habitual sin with no conviction, no turning, they have not had a true conversion experience. Lets be clear who we are referring to when we speak about the Church.

Each will answer to God regarding His life inside & out. He knows our intent. Yes, Christ addresses marriage & divorce according to God's original intent. That has not changed. The Holy Spirit of God speaking thru His disciples after His departure encourages us in our new life to seek God's desires not our own. We cannot force anyone to change their wants & desires of the heart/mind. After the cross & resurrection the forgiveness of sin is done. The requirement is That you not only believe He is the Son of God, sent here to pay our sin debt by suffering & dying in our place- experiencing the wrath of God so that we don't have to, but also that He arose demonstrating His power over death. Believe He is with the Father advocating for you having brought u into proper relationship by His spilled blood. Also, you must understand your old life is unacceptable, you must confess that you are a sinner & ask Him to be your God, your Lord to enter your very heart & receive your new life in Him. The church building can hold saved & the unsaved-all are to be taught the ways of God. The choice to believe or not must be made. Those who are forgiven much love much. You must desire to be changed, to be conformed to His image. He will not allow those who refuse to allow His power to make us brand new & who insist He accept our refusal to be sorry & who do not humble ourselves & acknowledge His way is best enter into His new heaven & earth. When we do not trust Him to satisfy our every need His way & we refuse to daily trust Him to strengthen us & forgive us on our journey – it grieves Him. We cannot refuse in advance to bring all of our selves into submission to Him. He knows we are weak, but If we continually justify those actions in our lives that He clearly says do not honor Him, all that Christ paid for us to escape: judgement & His wrath at the end of the set time for people to repent & accept Christ will be in vain. The rejection of Christ as Saviour & Lord will cost us our salvation. We may not knowingly pick & choose our sin. Isreal constantly refused to obey & tremendous cost to this day & will beyond time. each person there must accept Jesus Christ as Messiah also to escape judgement. The Word is clear to those who will believe He is the Messiah & pursue knowledge of His will, submitting to His Spirit & Word. May u be blessed as you study, pray, & follow Him.
