What’s on your bookshelf?

Does it matter what we read outside of the Bible?  Books on how to live a Christina life at Focus...Spiritual Research Network has updated its 2010 MASTER LIST OF AUTHORS AND BOOKS Not Recommended, containing many popular titles you’ll find at Christian bookstores and leadership conferences, and perhaps even your own church’s library. Some are labeled “Heretical,” others “Cultic,” and some are given a “caution.”

Let’s face it, we all have books on our shelves from Christian authors who sounded theologically deep when we bought the book, but now have made  the list of books those in discernment ministries are warning us about. I have my own collection of questionable titles that I’ve picked up at garage sales and Christian conferences over the years.  So I am going to share the list today, but want to make my motive clear: It’s not to tell you to burn your books or avoid reading certain authors. No, we do not tell anyone what they shouldn’t read. Instead we want to help you take what you read and hold it up to the pure light of Scripture, understanding that most books are a mixed bag of truth with error. Besides, I think these are worth talking about.

I like and completely agree with how Lighthouse Trails Blog said it today:

Our intention in posting the ‘Master List of Authors and Books Not Recommended’ is not to tell Christians they can’t read books, do research, or think for themselves, but rather, to warn people about aberrant, heretical and even occult teachings and practices inside and out of the church.

If you recognize an author, book, ministry, etc., on this list we encourage you to do your own research and to test what you find in light of sound Biblical theology. This is what Christian research ministries and pastors have done in order to faithfully warn the flock of God against deception.

Amen and amen.  That said, let’s all get better at learning how to spot the difference between truth and error. Because TRUTH + ERROR = TERROR.  Here is the list, from SRN. It’s rather lengthy! Let us know if you spot any you disagree with:

On page 51, Jordan promotes the Hindu occultic chakras. “God is not interested in becoming the savior of His children” (p. 131). “Science is God” (p. 187). “Money is equal with God” (p. 208). “Don’t mistake Christianity for God. They are NOT the same! God is in all, and yoga is not a rejection of Him” (p. 212). “God is not looking for your adoration, but your action” (p. 214). “…the only way you can honor God is with money” (p. 250).

I will not go into Family Christian Bookstores…I stopped a long time ago.

  2. Amy Spreeman says:

    Probably wise, Liz!

  3. Joni says:

It would be great if you could come up with a list of "safe or trusted" authors and resources like this ?? It is hard to find Biblically sound material these days.

  4. Josh says:

I must ask but why is Francis Frangipane listed here? I just wondering as I reading one of his book "In The Presence of God." In this book I have yet too find anything that is unbiblical, unless I missing something?

  5. David says:

Pray and ponder as you read any possibly inspired work.
