Using discernment properly

discernmentAre you ever told that you sound more like what you are against than whom you are for? Today we discuss watchmen and discernment ministries. There are some excellent ones out there, and unfortunately there are some that are more interested in just creating controversies for the sake of popularity. Where is the biblical balance? The answer is to shine the light on both what we are for and what we stand against. It’s part of defining terms, movements and theologies so that we communicate clearly. And it’s about motive. What’s your end game? Why point out error if not for the purpose of reconciliation?

What is discernment NOT about?  It’s not about being right, or having squishy gut feelings we call red flags. We need to continually downplay our own opinions and point people to what God says.

Joining us for this conversation today is, Heath Pucel of the Burnbrothers Ministry,  an organization that trains Christians on how to overcome their fear and share their faith.

  2. Mr Davis says:

God says, if you diligently study the truth it will be apparent when falsehood presents itself. Proverbs, Psalms, Isaiah, Jeremiah well all of it really.

Men say, study every false thing for if you don't study what is false how can you know it when it appears.

The problem with the second: who said its false? you? some other man maybe? Who is he that you take his word over the man I'm following? Aren't we just playing favorites? You have your man I have mine, you have scriptures supporting your view I have mine.

Now why is the first so important: The law "Counsel" of the Lord is perfect that means it is without contradiction and if we are dilegent and study we will find that to be true. This takes hard work and discipline and the Holy Spirits power and apart from the Spirit of God we are blind. For instruction doesn't come in word only but in deed and then in the right motive 1st Cor 13

But even perfect knowledge will not prevent us from being deceived, not even salvation in Christ again 1st Cor 13 attests to this fact. Our flesh is our problem here and it is always striving against the Holy Spirit of God. It is bent on rebellion and we can only resist it through the Holy Spirit granting us power bound up in a grateful heart from which true fruit will spring forth, fruit that will last. This then becomes our desperate condition. It is not Satan who is our problem or anything else, it is ourselves.

In the our Father prayer, we are to pray for protection from the evil. The word "one" has been tacked on.

In our battle against the principalities and powers of darkness of deception that are set in array against Christ and His holy ones. It is our own hearts where we win or lose. A broken and contrite heart Oh Lord you will not despise.

Heed the Author of Hebrews here.
Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
