A look at ALPHA

Good ShepherdAs we’ve looked into some of the movements impacting Christianity, we’ve had to ask ourselves, “What should our approach be on this one?” Clearly, we are to examine everything we hear and read, testing the spirits as God has asked us to do, and compare what man says against what God says in His Word, just as the Bereans did. Today we are going to talk about a program called The Alpha Course. What is it, and is there a legitimate concern that we as Christians should be looking into?

If you’ve experienced ALPHA or are a teacher, we welcome you to share in the comments section below.

Hiya. I've attended a full, official Alpha Course. Alpha is marketed as an evangelistic tool, but it started out life as a course for teaching new believers about the position held by its home church (Holy Trinity Brompton in London) on various Christian topics…

The problem is that these two demographics are spiritually in completely separate worlds and therefore require fundamentally different approaches.

For folks who are big Alpha fans, I thoroughly recommend the excellent book 'Proven Alpha Course Tips' by John Fairhaven. It's avaiable here: http://bookstore.authorhouse.com/Products/SKU-000

For those people who know their Bible but don't know much about Alpha and would like to understand the Course in a nutshell, I like to think the following, short online PDF booklet I've put together, offers that:

I studied Alpha for a number of years. Please don't hesitate to shout if you have any questions on this issue. God bless you,

I have to wonder how the Gospel can be non confrontational.

A Gospel that proclaimes all mankind as morally evil and destitute of the truth. As it is written , There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

A Gospel that proclaims that the creator of the Universe, stepped out of Heaven and Glory, the very one whom stood at the Right hand of God did that to become in all ways as a man yet was without sin for the sole purpose of redeeming His whole creation, which, was under a curse because of the disobedience of One man Adam for in Adam all die. This redeemption required He be willing to bear our sins in His own flesh, with all our shame and guilt and to take those sins to the cross and destroy those sins in His own death. All of this was foretold in Isaiah Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief : when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin… He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied : by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. …because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

A Gospel that proclaims! This was not done in secrete: as it says in Isaiah As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider. … The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

A Gospel that requires us to receive Christ as He is and not what we make Him out to be as it is written in John There was a man sent from God, whose name was John (John the Baptist). The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

A Gospel that requires complete whole hearted allegience to Christ Jesus who was crucified requiring a Spiritual Rebirth. In John it is written Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. And in Isaiah Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD. For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward. This Paul reiterates And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. And again Paul writes: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

    A Costly Gospel
    Christ Jesus said of Himself,
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

And Paul writes in Philippians But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

A Gospel that Sanctifies until the Lord takes us Home:
(I live) Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.

    A Gospel that saves:
John writes And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

May it be that all who receive this Gospel truly seek first the Kingdom of God (submit to His Kingship) and His righteousness (Accept His word) and put our very lives in His able hands who holds all things together by the power of His word.

A Gospel that testifies of first importance Christ Jesus who lived and died and was buried according to the scriptures and was raised again according to the scriptures fulfilling His word, thus bringing all into subjection to all He said.

And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. Deuteronomy 18:17-19

And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. Deuteronomy 18:21-22

A time is coming when one will come in his own name and demonstrate signs and wonders, so test the Gospel they hold to if it is of Christ Jesus and follows after the word of God and will not seek to change it. Salvation is of the Lord and we are saved by faith in Christ Jesus alone. 2 Thessalonians 2

If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 13:1-3

I sometimes think you guys are just to soft and gentle on heretics and unbiblical teachers. Sometimes standing up for truth might not be so nice. Alpha Course??? It is leavened with truth and lies! I appreciate you both very much…. dn
