How big a deal is Creation in Genesis?

last sun beams before sunset

There are many Christian leaders in the Church who will tell you that the Book of Genesis is mostly man-made myth, or that it really doesn’t matter whether Christ followers believe in a young earth or not, as long as we focus on Jesus and the Gospel. But did you know that Genesis actually points to our Savior?

Our guest today is from  Answers in Genesis, one of the largest apologetics ministries in the world, headquartered in Petersberg, Kentucky, along with its Creation MuseumTim Chaffey is one of AIG’s researchers and an expert in biblical and theological studies.

I normally don't do this, but I do have to point out that Brother Tim did not answer my question and doubled down on my concern.

Tim comes within a hairs breadth of saying that it would be a sin to interpret the Creation story as anything but literal.

My intital question, which, to the host's credit, was mostly read on the air, asked under what authority did Tim bind a literal interpretation of Genesis on us but loose the literal interpretation of passages like John Chapter 6?

Tim's response was to immediately state that he had no authority to interpret anything. He then stated the old adage of "Scripture interprets Scripture" (Which is really a euphamism for "don't what I say, just believe what I tell you the Bible says").

He continued that some books in the Bible are contextually meant to be alligorical and some are historical, and some are poetry etc etc etc. But all are the Inpiried Word of God. I fully 100% agree. Amen Brother! Preach it! But he never explained how we know which book is taken which way. How do we KNOW that the Psalms and Song of Songs are to be taken as poetic songs? Many of the Apostles when quoting them took them as literal (Acts 1:20 quoting Psalm 109 for example). So how do we know?

Brother Tim then went on and quoted several verses from Scripture, but then told us how to interpret them so that they would fit his preconceived notion that Genesis is to be interpreted literally.

So, he has no authority to interpret Scripture (his words) and we can only take Scripture's word for it, but then he interprets Scripture for us so that we can see, by his interpretation of the other Scripture verses, his origional interpretation is right? As a famous Man-in-Black once said "Truely you have a dizzying intelect!"

So, which is it? Does Brother Tim have the infallible gift of interpretation? Or can he be wrong? That was my second queston e-mailed into the show that was not read.

I don't type this to cause division. I type it, though, to point out the falicy in some Christians opinions: it's all self based. I alone interpret Scripture. No one else has authority over my interpretations. But MY interpretation is right, and it should be YOUR interpretation too!

We forget that, according to Scripture, we must listen to those whom Christ appointed to speak for Him (Luke 10:16) to that which is the Pillar and Bulwark of the Truth (1 Tim 3:15) that which will make manifest the Wisdom of God to the world (Eph 3:10) and who has the authority to make a final decision squables between us like this (Mt 18:17).

Without submitting to the visible authority God has established for us, by His power, on the earth, we will keep fracturing, dividing the Body of Christ beyond the 38,000 divisions already that cannot agree on things as important as the necessity of Baptism or as small as whether to have instraments in church or not. This is blatently against God's will for us: Jn 17:21, 1 Cor 1:10 among many others…)

May God Bless you in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Nate I hope you don't take this wrong but who has told you not to take it litteral. Some man or is that your own reasoning? Funny, it seems Christ Jesus took it litteraly but by all means Nate take some mans word or your own over that of Christ Jesus. Who is Christ to you anyways, you have the Pope and his emissaries. And what is His word to you, you have Church tradition to stand on. But we all have some guilt in that aspect for when we gather we do not practice what the scriptures spell out as proper conduct in order that we may better manage sin instead of confronting it. 1 Cor 12-14, Romans 12-14, Ephesians 4-5, Philippians 3-4

1 John 2:26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. (turn you away from the truth) 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

and make no mistake there is only One Body of Christ, One baptism, One Holy Spirit Ephesians 4 and there is only one way to be part of that Body you must be born again of the Holy Spirit John 3 and this is not by mans will but by the will of God John 1.

Believe the Pope who is the head of the Catholic Church if you want and remain carnal in your thinking 1 Cor 3. Follow after man if you want or follow after Christ and His word as handed down by Paul and the Twelve, you cannot do both 2 Peter 3. But we are all of us quick to take some mans word because its easier that looking into the Scriptures for ourselves always asking the Lord to show us the truth of His word.

To Christ there is only one body and He alone is the head of it. Ephesians 5:23 If you are His sheep you would do well not to follow after a strangers voice but listen for the voice of the Lamb of God who laid down His life for His sheep. John 10

Those who truly are sent by the Lamb will not only speak according to what the scriptures say but they will walk as Christ himself walked. Today men are served by the body yet they do nothing for the body, for when the body is gathered they only exercise themselves and they certainly do not hold up and follow in Paul's example:

Acts 20:33 I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel. 34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said , It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Wow, follow that link and see how many have been deceived.
Satan said to Eve, "Did God really say" and look what happened.
In Exodus 20, God himself said, "for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.” Yet they still don't believe it.
Jesus spoke of a literal creation in 6 days and a literal worldwide flood – but a minister recently suggested He (Jesus) got it wrong! Wow, and Jesus was there at the beginning and is The Word.
2 Timothy 4:2-4, Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
Yep, they won't believe anything which might make them unpopular?
