Mega-Church leaders circling the wagons on Twitter

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10)

Why are mega-church pastors taking to Twitter to attack, shame and condemn other believers? I’m sharing the following story from Do Not Be Surprised  about one such mega-leader attacking those who follow reformed theology. And then he attacks bloggers by characterizing them as “Basement Living Opinion Givers who compose their blog posts from their parents’ basement.” He’s not the first to use that unfortunate description by the way. (Caution: that link is for satire only!)

Whether you’ve been following the recent Southern Baptist document being discussed by pastors, or whether you ascribe to Calvinism or Arminianism, there are some interesting “camp building” and “wagon circling” going on in the body of Christ:

Ed Young, Jr.: “Reformed is Deformed”

Texas megachurch pastor Ed Young, Jr. took to Twitter to attack Reformed theology with the following remark:

Since Young is an SBC pastor, one almost wonders if he was offering his response to the controversial SBC document, A Statement of the Traditional Southern Baptist Understanding of God’s Plan of Salvation, which speaks rather critically of Calvinism. After a few hours of feedback and responses, Young posted this:

Well, who’s going to pass up that invitation? The relevant portion of Young’s sermon from Part 4 of his series, “Cool-Aid,” is below. Note that when Young speaks of “Reformed theology” or “Calvinism,” it is evident that he is referring specifically to the 5 points of Calvinism, or the Doctrines of Grace.

Now, there is far too much contained in this clip to respond to all of it. Suffice it to say that Young has clearly demonstrated that he is utterly ignorant of what Reformed theology actually teaches. The problem lies not in the fact that Ed Young has chosen to attack Reformed theology, but that he has provided a bizarre, inaccurate caricature of it.
That Ed Young, Jr. would preach such nonsense, and then advertise and boast about it is a sad reflection of the state of the church today. It is an egregious and disheartening thought to know that this man, this “pastor”, is leading countless numbers astray.
*Note: In the above clip, Ed Young, Jr. speaks about bloggers, and in true seeker-driven pastor fashion (no pun intended), characterizes them as Basement Living Opinion Givers who compose their blog posts from their parents’ basement. Well, Ed, just to let you know, I am writing this from my very own desk chair on my very own computer in my very own house that I pay for with my very own money every month. I just thought you should know.

I watched the video that contained those audio clips. If anything, I am still grieved at what he did. It was totally unwarranted and uncalled for on his part. The fact that he claims to know a lot of Reformed pastors basically tells me that he meant to give them a humongous slap on the face of not only them, but also those of us whom God has used His Word to open our eyes to the Truth and the fact that we are wretched sinners whom God had mercy upon.

I can only pray that God would have mercy upon him too.

The truly sad part was watching the standing ovation he got for such a rant. May God have mercy and open the eyes of "his" congregation so that they can truly see the glory of God in His salvation!

I just came across this video today, Such a misrepresentation of what the reformed theology is, but sadly, some will hear and think these things are so.
