Why is a Saddleback pastor teaching on the Kingdom Circles?

With all the buzz about the interfaith aspect of Saddleback Church’s P.E.A.C.E. Plan and the controversy over the King’s Way initiative that partners Rick Warren’s church together with the Islamic community, many question just how Saddleback is reaching Muslims after promising not to convert anyone to Christianity.

Could it be that not converting anyone is one reason Pastor Warren is getting so many questions about Chrislam?

This is a photo of Emmaus Weekend Pentecost, an event held last June 11 and 12 in The Parish of Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church in Sophia Antipolis, a town near Nice, France:

In “The Mission” workshop, which was part of an International Ecumenical Fellowship, Saddleback Pastor Abraham Meulenberg and his wife Marieke spoke to a small group of attendees.

If you’ll notice the diagram behind him, the Kingdom Circles are part of the session. Basically, it’s a simple but highly questionable evangelical tool that people are being taught to draw (sometimes called the “napkin drawing”) to demonstrate how those of other faiths can enter the Kingdom of God without converting to Christianity. If you’ve not heard of this, you need to. The video from the Common Path Alliance as well as this article from the Jesus in the Qur’an (Recently changed to Jesus AND the Qur’an) organization explains it:

The question is, does Meulenberg teach this? Or were those Kingdom Circles diagrams left over from a previous speaker, and Meulenberg taught on a different subject? I have several photos as part of a gallery that shows a progression of the diagram and notes as Pastor Meulenberg is presenting.

Who else teaches the Kingdom Circles methodology? Those who are proponents of “C-5 Contextualization,” (going by the names “Common Ground,” “Insider Movement,” “Camel Method,” etc.), a highly controversial movement that many believe is pure syncretism; the blending of two faiths—Islam and Christianity – into Chrislam. Those who are C-5 proponents say that just like Messianic Jews, there can be Messianic Muslims. Never mind that the “Isa” found in the Qur’an is NOT the Jesus of the Bible. Isa is not the Son of God.

Yet these Isa-worshippers say that they are Christian, and a growing number of Christian leaders are changing their paradigm from No way to Maybe to Sure, why not, in this “global conversation”:

There are many questions about how Christians should be reaching out to Muslims with the truth of the Gospel. If the gospel must be contextualized, how far can contextualization go without violating the gospel? And do the Kingdom Circles do that?

The one answer we can be sure of: There is no hope, no atonement for our sin and no way into the Kingdom of God without Jesus Christ. Christianity is the only faith that worships Jesus as the Son of God. He is our Messiah; our King.

Any movement that tells believers of other faiths and beliefs (Buddhism, Hinduism, New Age, Muslims, etc.), that they can enter the Kingdom of God without converting to Christianity must be questioned.

  1. Thanks for opening my eyes to something I was not aware of. Keep sharing the truth.

  2. My highest commendation to Amy Spreeman. She nailed it. What Amy is basically pointing out is that Warrens campaign with Muslims is the latest mutation of so-called friendship evangelism. But it is neither being their friend, nor is it evangelism. I would only add to Amy's brilliant points that other faiths must not just be questioned, but are strongholds that must be demolished as parts of the broad way vs. the narrow way.

Now, even if Warren is completely correct and the Orange County Register got it all wrong, this does not negate (nor has he rescinded or repented of signing the Yale document). Further, it does not negate his speech at the Islamic conference in which he did zero to preach the Gospel. It does not negate, nor has he repented of having Dr. Oz, a Muslim, speak at his pulpit. Neither does it negate nor has he repented for giving Muslim sympathizer and syncretist Tony Blair his Peace Plan award. Nor does it negate nor has he repented of his Global Peace Plan which he says can be forged with Muslims. If Warren's doctrine is pure and his interview with Piper airtight, then he must then use those revelations to repent for his New Age Ladies of Home Journal article and promoting Carl Jung-based Shape Personality Profiling Temperament divination. I have listened to Warren's speech to the Sinai Jewish Temple in Los Angeles, which also did not contain the Gospel (no Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world)..and continues to endorse its Rabbi David Volpe a leading false teacher of Judaism. If his doctrine is now pure, he would have to use it to refute most of his own teachings he has already published. I will know he has truly repented when I hear from him.

Rick Warren clamored for his Global Peace Plan and touted it to included Muslims. He even changed the P from Plant Churches to Promote Reconciliation in order diffuse any chance of offending Muslims. Even tried to invoked Scripture to justify it including Muslims…long before the recent uproar in the OC Register. What does he take us all for…fools? Who does he think he is kidding? And as you both point out he signed the Christian Response long before the OC uproars. This is beyond the pale!

“Ever since the religion of Islam appeared in the world, the espousers of it…have been as wolves and tigers to all other nations, rending and tearing all that fell into their merciless paws, and grinding them with their iron teeth; that numberless cities are raised from the foundation, and only their name remaining; that many countries, which were once as the garden of God, are now a desolate wilderness; and that so many once numerous and powerful nations are vanished from the earth! 3. Linda says:

I watched the video of the testimonies of two Muslims who say they believe in Jesus and still remain in their Muslim faith. I understand clearly where they are coming from and what they are saying. I've been working for years, sharing with a Muslim man in a third world country. We meet face to face often. I've given him the New Testament, which he says he's read. He now says exactly what these men related, that he believes in Jesus but is committed to remain a Muslim. Part of his reasoning is to avoid offending his family and relatives. But the real issue is that he has NOT truly accepted the Jesus of the Bible, though he says he has and is even encouraging others to read and believe the Bible. He does not love the true God with all of his soul and mind. His belief is a head knowledge and not a heart surrender. He is not on the narrow path, where we are told in the Bible offenses will come, but is rather on the very safe broad way and still very much on the way to destruction. The Jews of the Bible, in becoming Christians were never still considered part of the Jewish faith and community. They were terribly persecuted for their beliefs. Nor did they try to remain true "Jews". They knew the price they had to pay for fully committing to and confessing Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, and they willingly paid that price. They did not hide in the safe confines of their religion and traditions.
The teachings of the Koran and the teachings of the Bible cannot be followed at one and the same time. One must choose between them and follow one or the other because the teachings are so totally different in so many places. Allah and the God of the Bible are NOT one and the same and to bow before Allah and confess him is to, in fact, deny belief in Jehovah God.
Many people in many religions are attracted to Jesus, and rightly so. However, for different reasons they refuse to leave their religions and instead try to add Jesus to their beliefs. You do not "tack on" Jesus. Either He is Lord of all or not Lord at all in one's life. He is and always will be the only Way, Truth, and Life. Mixing truth with error never produces truth. Chrislam has long ago been condemned by the Bible. But one must read and understand it to realize this.
This is not intended to say that we should not love our Muslim neighbors. True love reaches out to bring another to the Truth. True love does not want any to perish, and therefore risks whatever is necessary to bring that one to the way of the cross….not the easy way, but the right way.

  4. Lucille says:

So sad what is happening in Christianity. But then everyone who claims to be a christian, is not one.

And the napkin drawings or kingdom circles or Chrislam will not save not one soul. It is the gospel that saves. Only the gospel brings a man, woman, boy or girl into the kingdom of God. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, also to the Greek…"

Honestly, I don't believe Messianic believers should call themselves by that term because if they truly have accepted Christ, then they are Christians. Christ lives in them.

Straight from the pit of hell!!

  6. Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life NO ONE go to the father except trough me. He is the only way to god. The bible says broad is the way of destruction but straight and narrow is the way to eternal life.

  7. Jesus did not preach Christianity. He preached the Kingdom. Turn to Jesus and his kingdom to be saved. If you turn to anything else to be saved, you are lost and teaching a false gospel with no power.
